Shift Your Mindset From Scarcity To Abundance

Shift Your Mindset From Scarcity To Abundance

February 24, 20254 min read

Most of us grow up surrounded by a scarcity mindset and false beliefs when it comes to money. We hear phrases like "money doesn’t grow on trees”, ”save every penny," or “money ruins your character" This mindset creates a sense of fear and limitation, making us feel like we’re always one step away from financial struggle or that we should not create wealth because it could turn us into a bad person.

But what if we flipped the script? What if, instead of seeing money as something undesirable, fleeting and hard to attain, we saw it as a resource—one that flows in and out of our lives, helping us build the future we envision and do good things in the world?

In my lifetime, I’ve encountered several situations where I fell victim to scarcity thinking. During a renovation, our entire budget was spent by the contractor, and all we had accomplished so far was demolition. I was terrified that we’d never be able to finish the project and feared we'd go broke. Where was the extra money we needed going to come from? Another highly stressful time was when my husband was forced into retirement at age 53, leaving us unable to tap into his qualified retirement account for another six years. Not receiving that “guaranteed” paycheck shook me to the core. But at the end of the day, everything has a way of working itself out.

Money as a Tool for Freedom and Impact

When we view money as a tool, we start asking different questions. Instead of "How can I make more money?" we ask, "How can I use the money I have to create the life I want?" This shift leads to more intentional decisions—whether it's investing in personal growth, funding your child's future, or building passive income streams.

Think of it this way: a hammer can build a house or sit unused in a toolbox. The value isn't in the hammer itself but in how you use it. Similarly, money gains value when it’s put to work, aligning with our goals and values.

The Power of Abundance Thinking

An abundance mindset doesn’t mean ignoring financial responsibilities. It means trusting that opportunities will continue to come as you make smart, aligned choices. It encourages generosity, long-term planning, and the belief that our potential isn’t capped by your current bank balance.

When I catch myself slipping into thoughts of scarcity and lack, I pause and look around. I take note of the abundance surrounding me—leaves on trees, blades of grass, grains of sand on the beach. God’s creation is overflowing with abundance, reminding me that scarcity is nothing more than a man-made construct.

How to Start Shifting Your Mindset

Let’s start by challenging limiting beliefs: Write down all your thoughts you have about money. Are they rooted in scarcity? Replace them with abundant affirmations like "There are always opportunities to grow my wealth." Pretend to live the lifestyle you are aiming for, whatever this may be. Walk the neighborhoods you want to live in, do some windowshopping with real cash in your pocket. Every time you see an item that you could buy with that money, acknowledge that you can afford it (and then move on). Enjoy an inexpensive beverage in a nice restaurant. Take time out of your day to enjoy the outdoors and enivison what it would feel like to be the boss of you. This is so much fun!

Next, set purpose-driven goals: Instead of focusing solely on a specific income target, set goals around what that money will enable you to do—travel, invest, give back, or retire early. It doesn’t matter how small your goal is. Setting the goal, taking the steps and reaching the goal creates a transformative experience that instills feelings of empowerment and eradicates victimhood. We are always in control of our life!

Put your money to work: Explore strategies like the Infinite Banking Concept, where your money can simultaneously grow, provide liquidity, and protect your future. Write out questions you have around the topic of wealth creation and then enter those questions in Google or YouTube (my favorite search engine). You will be shocked to learn that there’s already an answer to your question.

Celebrate small wins: Abundance starts with gratitude. Recognize every step forward, no matter how small.

Shifting from scarcity to abundance is less about the dollars in your account and more about the mindset you bring to the table. When you view money as a tool, not the goal, you reclaim control—building wealth with purpose, confidence, and peace of mind.
